Cricket Holler Campout

For our December campout this year instead of doing a lock-in, as we have traditionally done in December, the PLC decided we wanted to do some winter camping so we would have the opportunity to earn some camping nights and get to camp in the snow.

The plan for this campout was for the scouts to work on cooking, campfire building, and create an opportunity for current Arrow of Light Cub Scouts (AoLs) to join us for a couple of hours on Saturday to see what a campout is like and to promote the troop.

We arrived at Cricket Holler after dark on Friday night knowing that our adult leaders cancelled the second night of camping due to predicted cold temperatures and even
colder wind chills. We set up our tents and camp, had Cracker Barrel, and went to bed shortly thereafter.

Saturday morning arrived cold and dry.  However, before the day was over this would change as scouts would have the opportunity to camp in the snow. This is important to the scouts because it fulfills a requirement for the long and difficult Camping Merit Badge!

After lunch, a couple of AoLs joined us for some games and a dessert making competition (the cub scouts were the judges, while our troop scouts did the cooking).

Then, our adult leaders received a message telling them that a level one snow emergency had been declared in the area. And so, the decision was made to leave mid-afternoon instead of after dinner. We all worked together and quickly finish packing up and loaded up the vehicles.  We safely returned home mid-afternoon on Saturday before the storm got worse.
